Preventive Health Checks for Men - bigstockphoto_Grandfather_And_Grandson_3870536

Men's Health is much more than reproductive health. Men are at higher risk than women in some diseased which thankfully can be prevented altogether or detected early enough in order to cure them.

At the Chermside Medical Centre we ensure that we follow all of the guidelines prepared for General Practice and this involves Preventive Health.

Preventive Health Checks for men and women is a major part of our commitments.

"One of the key roles of general practice is to prevent disease. As primary health care providers who see 86% of the population every year, general practitioners and their staff play a central role in preventive care that:
  • is opportunistically provided when patients present with other problems or concerns
  • anticipates the preventive needs of their patients by providing reminders for preventive care, and
  • proactively targets high risk individuals who may be least likely to seek out such care."

  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Chronic Lung Disease
  • Chronic Respiratory Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Some cancers - especially Prostate and Bowel Cancers
  • Injury (sustained at workplace, traffic accidents, sports)
  • Suicide

Why?

  • men generally lead a higher risk lifestyle than women
  • men are also less likely to visit a GP
  •
Why men won't visit a GP?
  • A number of barriers prevent men in consulting with a Doctor:
  • men often work long hours or shift work
  • a lot of men may not visit a GP unless they have some specific problem that concerns them
  • society expects men to be 'manly' i.e. men are expected to be tough, independent and always physically fit
  • Although attendance rates of men to a GP increase after the age of 45, the problems managed at that stage are often chronic

Men's Health Checks - what to watch out for?

There are a number of health issues that men need to watch out for. Some of the issues listed below relate particularly to men, as those are the diseases that men are more at risk of than women.  However, there are also some problems like Skin Checks and Mental Health issues that men often dismiss, assigning it purely to women or "girly" problems due to the stereotypical divisions in our society.

We would like to change such attitude and make sure that men's health receives as much attention as women's health does. Early detection offather-son_cb107397 any of the following diseases may prevent more serious problems arising, SERIOUSLY!
