The XVI Global Congress on Medicine and Health in Sport and World Football Championship of Medical Teams The WORLD FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FOR MEDICAL TEAMS was first organized in Barcelona (Spain) in 1995 by Professor Ferran Morell from the Pneumology Department of the Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron under the auspices of the Facultat de Medicina (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). For 10 consecutive years (1995-2004) the Championship was held in this Catalan city and since then various Medical Teams from all over the world, but primarily from around Europe, come together not only to play football but also, as it was stated by the organization, "to make friends". During this X editions, the matches took place in the Football fields of F.C. Barcelona, and the final was held at the Mini Estadi of this prestigious football club. Information of this championship was sent all over the world to 300 colleagues and ads were inserted to different medical magazines. A large number of countries took part during this ten years of Championship: Argentina, Australia, Austria (3 teams), Belgium, Brazil (4 teams), England, Germany (2 teams), Lithuania, Paraguay, Portugal, Republic of Georgia, Slovenia, and from many different cities in Spain including Barcelona, Girona, Málaga, Mallorca, Murcia, Vitoria and Zaragoza. As rules underlined, this Championship is exclusive for Medical Doctors, and compulsorily at least 2 players older than 35 from each team had to be on the field at any time during the match. Moreover, the players are requested to answer a simple test on easy medical questions set by the delegates of the Organization, just to make absolutely sure that everyone is medical doctor.

For football nuts, the week of football overseas is truly a trip of a lifetime and an unforgetable experience playing the sport we love in a foreign country amongst great friendships.
To be eligible, you must be a qualified medical practitioner. The selection process is open each year to all those eligible however there is usually a regular core group of players with a few new players each year.
