Dr Fitzgerald graduated from the University of Queensland in 1995. He completed 2 years of residency at Royal Brisbane Hospital, followed by a year as senior house officer at Prince Charles Hospital. He has been a general practitioner on Brisbane's southside before moving to the northern suburbs. Dr Fitzgerald obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1993 and is interested in all facets of general practice.
